National Occupational Standard for Site Inspection

In 2015 the ICWCI nominated a number of their members to participate in the review of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Site Inspection.  The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) is responsible for reviewing and maintaining the construction industry’s NOS and facilitates the reviews in consultation with occupationally specific employers and stakeholders.  The development of NOS is carried out across the four home nations (NATIONAL) to ensure they reflect current working practices within a sector (OCCUPATIONAL) and reaffirm the benchmark required by that sector (STANDARD).  Many occupations, including those in the construction industry, have adopted National Occupational Standards (NOS) as their sector’s benchmark to demonstrate competency and/or the knowledge and understanding of a specific function within a job role.

NOS have numerous uses for employers and businesses including:

  • The development of a sector’s vocational qualifications (in Construction NVQs and SVQ are derived directly from the NOS)
  • Continued professional development
  • Increase job satisfaction.
  • Increase business productivity
  • Selection and recruitment
